This page will serve as a class diary of sorts and keep you up to date on what has changed at the site. I have always found a reverse chronological accounting of site development a useful feature, if for no other reason than because it allows you to check at a glance to see if something has changed on the site.

If you are one of the folks who contributed material to the site please do not forget to place a note on this page.

21 January 2004 Beginning to work on the WWW site for the Spring Semester 2004 version of the course. Notes below this line are associated with the previous (Spring 2002) iteration of Arch. 245. As soon as the seminar enrollment stabalizes we will establish sections for individual student's work.

12 April

Things have been kind of quiet on the Arch. 245 WWW site but that is about to change as we assemble our 'end-of-year' WWW exhibit.

I added a list of exercise summation coordinators to the exercise TOC page  and posted the Dynamic Effects Exercise

17 March

Inga added part of her 40 daylight qualities photos and the Daylight Source Qualities presentation to her page.

14 March

Gwelen added some daylight qualities photos and POC presentation to his page.  Enjoy

5 March

Gwelen put the images from our models of professor Benton's office on the site in images/cris_office. The images are labeled like we labeled the models and have "d" and "s" for views from the door or side positions.

Drat, I need to find some time to work on this site. The class has established a pleasant space and this year's crew of students is distinguishing themselves. We have just completed the Sketch Model exercise and are beginning the Daylight Qualities exercise.

I note that Cory is beginning to gather his Daylighting Qualities exercise images in a folder on this site. I encourage you all to follow suite as it is fun to look over his shoulder as he proceeds. Also int he category of posted student work is the KJS group's posting of a beginning page on Proof of Concept exercise using Jane's Bedroom as a subject.

20 February

Dror, Inga, and Elena peer into their model of the Faculty Lounge in Optometry.

The Proof-of-Concept Exercise continues with a review of Phase I efforts in class on Thursday. In class we will look at you data and photographs, then play detective to understand variations that might occur between the full-scale space and its diminutive counterpart.

Miscellaneous notes: the login and password given for class use on our FrontPage site are case sensitive. I have tested them and they do work. I will have a video project for those who want to display results from the WWW.

19 February

Demonstration of WWW editing environment (FrontPage) goes flawlessly in live presentation. Class eager to wade into the possibilities of FrontPage and WWW authorship.

I've added a bibliography (under development) and glossary to the course WWW site.

15 February

An example of daylight revealing texture from Tony Dubovsky -- crumpled paper

The roster from Thursday's class is posted -- with a tip of the hat to Dror for taking notes on the categories and typing them up.

12 February

Eddie, Rosie, and Gwelen outside of their model of HFA-20.

Students presented their Proof-of-Concept models and a fine lot they are. Photometric equipment was issued; measurement and photographic technique discussed. I am really looking forward to the results.

7 February

Fisheye image of the class clustered around the PEC heliodon (links to a larger image.)

The class visited the remarkable Pacific Engery Center in San Francisco. Kudos to PhD student, CCAC Instructor, and PEC Tech Staff member Robert Marcial for a fine seminar covering the heliodon, daylighting model display, model shop, tool lending program, and glazing.

The completed Phase I POC model is due in class on Tuesday. I do not expect an photometric measurements by Tuesday. We will review the status of the model in class and you can then continue with photographs and measurement.

5 February

Eddie, Rosie, and Gwelen are working on HFA-20

Groups have formed for the Proof of Concept Exercise:

Inga, Dror, and Elena are working on the Faculty Lounge in the School of Optometry. This is a unilaterally lit space with somewhat complex interior geometry and external shading from facade elements. The photographs viewed in class revealed a visual pattern due to specular reflections from the glass surface.

Jane, Karen, and Sylvia are working on a residential bedroom with windows on two different walls, one of which is shaded by a nearby building. The challenge here will likely revolve around establishing an appropriate horizon context for model testing.

Eddie, Rosie, and Gwelen have taken on the ever fashionable HFA classroom A-20. This is a non-orthagonal space with windows on two walls and a high, translucent clerestory facing south. This project will have to develop a model shorthand for representing the cluttered finishes of A-20 and, like the bedroom project, deal with horizons in two directions. And there is something of a challenge in representing the diffusing glazing.

Manuel, Naoya, and Cory have set their sights on a modest space in Wurster Hall. Wurster's interior finishes -- rough texture plywood and concrete -- require some ingenuity to capture in model form.

Models are due for inspection in class on Tuesday, 12 February, good luck to all.

3 February

A decorative ceiling at Christ Church College in Oxford, England. This  ornamental surface graces the entry to the college's Dining Hall and is lit by reflected daylight from generous windows

Worked a bit on site maintenance and added some new links. Gathered images for subsequent use on the site.

31 January

An introduction to daylighting (complete with instructor biases) continued with physical models being introduced int he context of Lockheed Building 157.  On hold, but not to be missed, is a more detailed review of the fine results from Part 3 of the Warmup Exercise. We will use these products from each group as fodder for the first WWW authoring exercise.

The class completed the estimate - measure - modify - estimate - measure cycle on all four Warmup models in 23 minutes!

29 January

The grand WWW scheme revealed to class -- tacit buyin implicitly conveyed. In this class we were able to project WWW images froma laptop connected to the Internet via an IEEE 802.11b bridge some distance away. In preparation for the next couple of weeks is a field trip to the Pacific Energy Center and WWW authoring orientation session in one of the Wurster computer labs.

26 January

The Proof-of-Concept assignment is posted. Started culling through old photographs to collect visual fodder for this WWW site -- always a fun exercise. The 'chapel' sketches are posted on the Warm Up Assignment page.

25 January

In what was largely a day of meetings I managed to scan the chapel sketches and work on the Proof of Concept assignment (to be issued Tuesday).

Rosie's chapel sketch
was pretty close.

24 January

The second class got us halfway through an introductory daylighting lecture. Students have constructed cardboard models of the 'chapel' and will experiment with them before the next class.

Posted the beginnings of a student index page.

23 January

Busy day today, not much time. Revised the header yet again, created an 'included page' footer, and added a gratuitous image or two.

22 January

Class starts. Worked a bit more on laying out the WWW site, revised the header. Having a problem importing the handout PDFs into the site.

Assigned the first introductory exercise -- predicting and then simulating light inside a hypothetical chapel space.

21 January

Put a bit more work into a provisional header and trying out (for the first time) the shared borders navigation feature of FrontPage. I scanned the handouts form for the first exercise into PDF and have placed them in the exercise section. Added the syllabus.

19 January

Starting to warm up for the Spring 2002 iteration of Daylighting. This time around I want to use the seminar as a vehicle for exploring WWW media as a conduit for the distribution of material to students and their submission of class work as well. First step: start this WWW site.
