Application Process

For each course for which you would like to be considered for the next regular semester only, you must submit (1) a completed Graduate Student Instructor/Reader Application, (2) a curriculum vitae or resume, and (3) an unofficial transcript. Current GSIs must reapply to be considered. In addition, if you are interested in any of the following positions, you must submit the specified supporting documents.

  • The GSI at 25% in ARCH 100A/B, ARCH 200A/B, and ENV DES 11A/B will support the teaching of the computer module in each of these courses. If interested in providing computing support, please submit a supporting document describing your applicable computer expertise.

  • ARCH 140 (taught spring semester) has an earlier application deadline, usually Monday of the fourth week of the fall semester. Selected GSIs must take a one-unit, five-week teaching methods seminar in the fall to discuss pedagogical strategies, plans for course improvements, and development of homework and lab exercises. The schedule of this seminar will be determined once the GSIs are selected and will be based on the group's availability. In addition to the GSI/Reader Application, please fill out the ARCH 140 GSI Questionnaire: PDF Version | Word Version.

  • Students in ENV DES 1 begin to think graphically about the relationship between spaces, site and urban systems, and graphic representation. An ability to critique in this area is essential to success as a GSI in the course. Please include a digital portfolio of at least five examples of graphic representation in the architectural, landscape, or urban context. These can range from sketches to final presentation drawings.

  • The primary focus of the ENV DES 11A course is freehand drawing. Please submit a digital portfolio of ten or so examples of your work in freehand drawing (e.g., still life, the figure, landscape, city scenes, building studies, etc.). A solid background in this area is crucial to teaching the course effectively.
