Notes on Kite Aerial Photography: Background

Test Rounds
A Collection of Incidental Self-Portraits

One lesson from my early experience with KAP is the prudence of firing a test shot while the rig is in near the ground. This single exposure checks of radio system function, alignment of the shutter release servo, camera power status, presence of film in camera, and so on. It is extraordinarily frustrating to send a rig aloft, shoot an entire roll of hard-won shots, and find on landing that something didn't work. Having been in the habit of tossing these test photos aside I recently decided to gather some for a page. I've also added some function test shots from the workbench, many from late at night. So, these images share the common trait that they are an artifacts from the test firing of a KAP rig. Collectively they provide a portrait of the KAPer at work -- a series punctuated by the serious concentration associated with 'why doesn't this work', by eagerness to get aloft, and by what Claudia calls my chipmunk look (squinting into the sky.)

Take up kite aerial photography and you too can have a collection of incidental self-portraits.
