Last week I had a nice day at the beach with both an early morning and early afternoon KAP session on a largely deserted stretch of beach. This is a location that I know well and have KAPed several times in the past.

The morning session went well with a westerly wind blowing my new rok and rig out over the ocean for an angle that I haven't ever really captured here. So far so good. Those images seemed relatively clear. Here's one for reference:

I returned to a spot maybe a mile or so down the beach after lunch. The wind had picked up, and having struggled somewhat in the morning to bring the rok back in, I decided to switch to a 10 foot delta. The rig was about 120 feet down the line from the kite, which was pulling relatively hard (not sure if this is relevant to the current question, so I'm throwing in all the details).

I had the s95 set in Tv mode, with the shutter speed at the max of 1/1600. SDM was running the standard time lapse script at a 4 sec. interval. These are the same settings I have typically used for KAP with this camera, including earlier that morning. I believe all of the EXIF data is viewable on the Flickr images.

All of the entire run look something like these:

I have checked the lens, and except for a few specs of dust, it seems free of smears or debris. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I'd certainly like to figure this out before ruining another whole session. Should I force a faster shutter speed via SDM when the wind is blowing this hard? This doesn't look like motion artifact really to me though. It almost looks like the auto focus was misfiring or something. Did I unintentionally key a setting that caused this? Any and all ideas are much appreciated.

I just purchase a Gomberg Skyform 15 and looking for anyone with experiece with this Kite. I try to get it to fly with no success I had a 10' "Y Bridle tail" w/a 15' Fuzzy tail attach to the kite. The winds were blowing a constant 5+mph the kite would inflate and rise then the top right and left edge of of the front vents would fold in and collapse this would happen everytime I would send it up. I then used my PLK 2m2 pilot and went up with no problem so I am baffle why the Skyform 15 did not go up and it is only 5sqft smaller it looks like a sutton 16 flow form.
http://www.gombergkites.com/I-SF2.JPG

Hello all,

I am new to KAP and I'm hoping some of you veterans can offer some insight into a problem I'm having with my flowform.

I sewed a FF03A (Harald Prinzler) that is approximately 15 sq feet. I used 0.75 oz coated ripstop and it (used to) fly beautifully in steady wind even with no tail. However, after storing it for a couple months rolled/balled up, I had a terrible time flying it. It was flapping erratically and diving out of the sky... the cells were not inflating properly.

I couldn't find any damage but I did notice that the inflation problem seemed to be related to how wrinkled it was. (Literally wrinkled from being balled up.) The coated nylon is very stiff and crinkly and I couldn't flatten out the wrinkles while I was onsite.

My questions:

1) Is this a familiar thing? If I'm right about the wrinkles I can probably figure out a way to smooth it out at home but advice welcome.

2) Any storage tricks for this kind of kite? I'm going to be more careful folding it up in future, but even neatly it's going to get wrinkled.

3) If I make more flowforms I'm considering using uncoated ripstop, the softer kind. Are flowforms typically made with the uncoated stuff? I've searched for discussion threads on this topic but can't find this issue addressed specifically.

If anyone cares to reply to this, much appreciated!

All best

Anna

Gents,

I'm considering to host a KAP day or weekend in the coming summer months in my home town, Gorinchem, on the banks of river Merwede! Many interesting KAP topics around: Loevestein Castle, Fort Vuren, river Linge, Biesbosch, bridge over A27, you name it, it's all there. First of all, let's find out how many KAPers are interested in such a day or weekend, let's say early July 2013.
we could do KAP sessions during the day, than share BBQ or dinner. At evenings we could invite people to demonstrate their KAP rigs, or share photos. I will try to find suitable facilities, maybe a camping ground, farm, bed and breakfast or, whatever!

Everybody is welcome to join in. We could pick people up from the airport when needed.

Haven't seen Gorinchem yet in my photo stufff? Please take a look at some KAP pictures of last Saturday!

Regards,

Bas

http://www.flickr.com/photos/22909965@N06/sets/72157633682119950/

The new Ricoh GR looks interesting:

Big sensor (full APS-C), very good 28mm f2.8 lens, intervalometer, 245g (8.64 oz) with battery and card.
The sensor is 8 times bigger than earlier Ricoh GRD models, but the camera is not much bigger or heavier.
The MY1-3 controls enable you switch immediately to your KAP settings.
The GR has the Pentax Time and Aperture priority mode (TAv) where you can set both shutter speed and aperture and the camera automatically adjust the ISO. This sounds like a useful KAP option.

At f2.8 the corner performance destroys the heavier Nikon Coolpix A (more expensive & no intervalometer):
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/ricoh-gr/5

Spec. comparison with Nikon Coolpix A:
http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/side-by-side?products=nikon_cpa&products=ricoh_gr

The only potential disadvantage I can see is the lack of anti-aliasing filter. Urban Kappers are going to have a problem with the moire fringing (roof tiles and bricks etc). It might be easy enough to remove in raw processing.

Note: Max shutter speed wide open is 1/2000, as you stop down it increases to 1/4000 at f5.6 and smaller apertures.

I've been flying my 9ft Levi Delta on and off when the winds present themselves, but with summer here and the winter breezes fading in Michigan's northern reaches I decided to pick up a 78" Rokkaku to cover the lower winds that are more common. I got it in the mail this afternoon, read up and practiced putting it together, and ran out to a local park to try my luck before the evening lull came.

Bleh! I could tell right from the get-go that the bridle was screwed up, and with no internet handy to figure out my mistake I decided to keep trying to get a flight so I wouldn't go home empty handed. Fighting with weaving and bobbing, I managed to get it up a ways and into a somewhat stable air pocket. The lower bridle was completely slack the entire time, which proved to nearly be a death sentence as the winds slowed and it crept slowly towards a mess of trees behind a RV park. With many campers watching me struggle to pull line in fast, the Rok landed about 30' up in some brush and trees.

Fortunately I'm a better tree climber than I am a kite flyer, and I quickly scaled the trees to pick the kite out of the branches. I was beginning to miss my single-lined delta while fighting to untangle bridles wrapped umpteen times around everything.

Getting home, I took a look through the "Rok Bridle Guide" and figured out what needed adjusted. Turns out the stock bridle was A) way way too long (something like 25 feet each segment) and B) not even close to adjusted for a proper flight. Oops. I pulled it all apart and started from scratch, finishing before nightfall but not before the winds died. Rats! Hopefully with the bridle figured out my next flights won't end in digging line out of blackberry bushes.

-Nathan

My rig is a HoBEAK, and I love it, pretty much. Only, I've recently become aware of a certain limitation. It will pan, but it won't tilt. This has lost me shots. Have you ever tried to pull in, hand over hand, a thousand feet of line, when the wind was blowing strong and steady - and your camera was tilted at the wrong angle to capture the gleaming white cruise ship, sailing in through the Golden Gate? I didn't get the rig down until the ship was past Alcatraz.

So I've looked on the Brooxes site, with an eye for adding a tilt function to my HoBEAK. It doesn't, however, seem as if that option is offered. I could, maybe, replace my lower utility frame with the basic tilt frame; but how would I make it tilt? I could buy another servo, I guess, to power it; but it would need gears or something, too, right? And how would I control it? No, that doesn't look like it'll work.

I guess what I'll need is a new rig. Ah, let's see, the Brooxes Basic KAP Kit (BBKK) is only 72 dollars (more than I wanna spend), and it "was designed for radio control, using model airplane servos to provide 360-degree horizontal (pan) rotation, vertical tilt, and shutter control." Sounds good. But, no, wait: "you will need tilt and shutter servos...and a two- to four-channel radio control system." What? Did I read that right? It was designed for radio control but it doesn't come with a radio control system using model airplane servos but it doesn't come with servos.

I'm baffled. Why wouldn't there be an option to add a tilt function to the HoBEAK, and why would the BBKK be sold incomplete? Does anyone have an explanation? Is it that I'm projecting my inherent state of confusion on the Brooxes site? Or, better yet, does anyone have a suggestion for how I could upgrade my HoBEAK with a tilt function?

A while back I was describing KAP to someone, and it dawned on me that I tend to latch onto a particular idea and pursue it into the ground. I won't go into the pathology if this, except to say it shows up in almost every one of my pursuits. But as it relates to KAP, I can point to a succession of ideas I went after and am going after:

When I started, my grail was to get a camera airborne. I started with a not very suitable kite, so this was a tough goal. After three crashes I asked here, got good advice, changed my kite, and met my goal. Looking back at my early KAP it's obvious to me I stuck with this idea for a while: lots of "gee-whiz!" but not a lot of artistry.

Later my goal was to learn to compose in the air. The "almost" photographs started to get annoying. I wanted to be able to decide what the camera was pointing at, and I was bad at it. I can't remember if I tended to aim too high or too low, but it drove me nuts. It was a great motivator to get out every chance I got and try to improve my craft, and eventually it paid off. Time in the sky eventually solved this one.

After each goal I took on another one. Some required more out of me, like learning to aim or learning to fly under more and more challenging conditions. Others required more out of my gear, like getting a new camera or a kite that let me extend my wind range. But always I've had something just over the horizon I'm trying to reach.

My current KAP grail project is to do panoramas well past sunset in order to capture those pastel colors in the sky combined with the lights of the city (or in my case town or resort). This was sparked off when I saw Michael Layefsky's night-time photograph of San Francisco during WWKW 2009. It was as if a light went on. (So to speak... night time, after all.) I knew night-time KAP could be done, so night-time panoramas were just over the horizon.

This one is taking me a while. I got a new camera, I'm designing a new autoKAP rig, and I'm trying to wring every speck of stability out of the thing so I can use longer and longer shutter times. I'm not even close yet, but getting there is a lot of fun.

What's your KAP grail project?

Tom

While I'm building my fleet for KAPing, I have had this thought, that it would be nice to start with a single model of kite, and have it made in multiple sizes. This way I'd get familiar with one design, get to know it's behavior etc.

Now the question is: have you experienced kite fliers noticed, that will the size of a kite (with same design) have an effect on the upper limit of it's wind range? Especially what comes to the stability.

So, obviously if there's not much wind, you'd get a bigger kite for greater lift, but if the wind is too strong, does the switching to smaller model have the same 'extending' effect on the wind range in the upper bound? Or is it just better to ditch that model and get something that is already designed for stronger winds?

- Henrik

I have a standard 9 ft Levitation Delta and have it found it to be a reliable flier for my KAP rigs in the 12 - 20 MPH wind range. I have flown it in higher winds but this is outside of it's designed wind range (flies erratically and pulls too hard).

I was out flying a couple of days ago in 20 to 30+ MPH winds. I typically use a 7.5 ft Conyne delta or Trooper delta for these higher winds, but wanted to try something that would provide some additional lift. So, for the fun of it, I substituted the shorter Conyne spreader spar into the Levitation and it flew suprisingly well. The stock spreader that came with my Levitation is 46.75 inches long. The Conyne spreader is 39.5 inches (7.25 inch difference).

I flew the Levitation for about 20 minutes with a single fuzzy tail and captured some of it on video (see below). It flew at a relatively high angle (50+ deg) in winds ranging between 20 and 30 MPH with a measured line pull of 10 to 15 lbs. It provided more pull and was more stable than my Conyne and Trooper deltas.

Levitation (short spreader)

I'm not sure if shortening the spreader this much is a good idea or not. I've only tried this on my Levitation once but the results were surprisingly good. I am wondering if others in the kiting community have tried shortining the spreaders this drastically on deltas and if it is a good approach for obtaining higher wind range or am I asking for trouble?

Dynamic Spreader Spar for Variable Wind Conditions

Winds have been very strong and gusty here for the last few days since the start of WWKW. KAP conditions have not been ideal, however the higher winds have given me a chance to experiment with an idea I’ve been wanting to try for a while that will allow my Levitation to adapt to varying wind conditions.

The 9ft Levitation delta has become my primary kite for moderate to high winds from 15 MPH and above. (My Jones 7ft Rok is my primary kite for lighter winds up to ~15 MPH but that's another topic). For winds between 15 and 20 MPH, I’ll typically use the Levitation with a standard length spreader spar which is 46.75 inches long. For higher wind conditions I’ll use a shorter spreader (39.5 inches) which extends the wind range up to 30MPH+ and significantly reduces the amount of pull and provides a more stable, pleasant flight. Additional discussion of the dynamic spreader spar can be found here:

http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/discuss/index.php?p=/discussion/3398/extending-levitation-delta-upper-wind-range#Item_29

The short spar works well as long as the winds stay consistently above approx. 20 MPH, however, it doesn’t provide the desired lift in lighter winds.

I’ve been working on a dynamic spreader spar that adjusts its length based on the wind conditions. I’ve only had a few hours of flight time with this, but it looks favorable that it will allow the Levitation to be flown from ~5MPH to 30MPH+ with a single spreader spar configuration. The dynamic spreader is basically a spring loaded telescoping graphic tube that keeps a constant spreader tension on the kite wings. At low wind speeds the spreader is fully extended maximizing wing surface area and lift. As the wind increases, the spreader is compressed resulting in a swept wing profile reducing surface area and line pull.

The dynamic spreader I’m using is an initial prototype and is constructed from graphic arrow shafts (roughly equivalent to P200 tubes). The uncompressed spreader length is 46.75 inches in light winds (length of stock spreader) and compresses down to approx. 42 inches in winds up to 30MPH. Its compression limit is set to 39.5 inches which it will reach in winds above 30MPH. The spring tension can be adjusted to provide different amounts of compression for a given wind speed.

With the current settings, I’ve been able to fly very comfortably in winds from approximately 15 MPH to 30 MPH with a line pull between approximately 2.5 and 12.5 lbs.

The dynamic spreader weighs 38 grams. The stock fiberglass spreader that comes with the Levitation weighs 67 grams.

Here are a few videos and photos showing more detail:

Basic operation video.

Launch and flight video showing the spreader compress as the wind increases.

Picture: No spreader compression (light wind flying, standard 46.75 inch length spreader)

Picture: Medium compression (winds up to 30MPH, 3.5 inch compression)

Picture: Full spreader compression (winds greater then 30MPH, 7.25 inch compression)

Additional pictures and videos showing construction details and operation can be found on my Flickr site.

I plan on developing this further over the summer.
