Notes on Kite Aerial Photography: Others
Jan van der Elsen's pages continue with examples from his first KAP expeditions.
Kinaird Lighthouse in Fraserburgh, the oldest
lighthouse on the Scottish East Coast (25K jpg)
(26-Jan-97) Since I had 5 pictures left on a film, I wanted
finish the film on a Sunday afternoon, but.. no wind. In the hope
to find some wind at the coast, I drove up to Kinaird Lighthouse
in Fraserburgh. Indeed, there was a light breeze and it was just
about able to lift the camera. Since I had to shoot the pictures
against the lowering sun, I could not take the rig far out. This
shot however has (because of the light) a very nice
"atmosphere" and made the session worthwhile. My wife
almost had a stroke when the kite and rig came down a few times
due to the lack of wind, believing it was lost forever.. It's a
pity you can't capture the screams, yells and the "oh
no!!" on the picture.

Slains Castle, just a few miles north of Cruden Bay
(from upper left clockwise 38K jpg, 33K jpg, 33K jpg, and 41K
jpg)

(2-Feb-97) Had a truly
superb session at Slains Castle, just a few miles north of Cruden
Bay. This ruin inspired the guy that wrote the Dracula story.
Sitting on a cliff, with the sun just right, the castle gives
very dramatic results. The rig was about 120 ft up, about 30 ft
below the kite. Winds were very strong and I expected a lot of
blurred pics. The results however were the best so far! It was
hard work, keeping the kite under control. The hard wind and the
turbulence near the cliffs tested my (newly trained) skills to
the limit. I have decided to go back to this place once more, to
get a few more vertical shots from higher up.

Duthie Park, Aberdeen (29K jpg and 29K jpg)
A sunny day in Aberdeen. Often Simon and myself escape the office during lunch time to shoot some film, this time in Duthie Park.
