Do you have a strong interest in architecture but a major or undergraduate degree in another field? Are you considering a graduate degree in the design professions? Our new eight-week summer program in the Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley welcomes students who have this drive and curiosity.

The goals of our program are two-fold. First, the culture of the design studio, and the related media courses and lectures, present a condensed experience of architectural study at the graduate level. It is a test of one’s enthusiasm for the material, the intensity, and the complexity of the curriculum. Second, the studio itself is designed toward the production of architectural projects that can serve as portfolio material in the graduate school application process.

[IN]ARCHITECTURE is open to those with an undergraduate degree, and to undergraduate juniors and seniors in good academic standing, with a grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

Program Dates and Cost
This eight-week summer program begins on Monday, June 22, and ends on Friday, August 14. Classes are held in Wurster Hall, home of the College of Environmental Design, on the UC Berkeley campus. The program cost (including fees) is as follows for 10 units of instruction administered through Berkeley Summer Sessions:

When your application has been approved by the Department of Architecture, you will receive instructions on how to register for the three classes through UC Berkeley Summer Sessions. NOTE: Due to an unanticipated high volume of applications received, the review process has been extended; notification of acceptance will be sent out as soon as possible.

Course of Instruction
The program comprises three classes, for a total of 10 units:

• ARCH 100A Fundamentals of Architectural Design (Studio). (5) This class meets for 15 hours per week, and engages a series of design projects from formal abstraction and analysis through building design. The studio syllabus is coordinated with intensive skill development in both digital and analogue media, such that the language of architecture is simultaneously learned and deployed.
   
• ARCH 129X Special Topics in the Practice of Design (Lecture). (3) This course comprises a series of lectures by members of the Berkeley faculty and practitioners in the field, and short writing assignments that connect theoretical material to studio design work.
   
• ARCH 133A Two-Dimensional Computing Techniques in Architecture (Media Instruction). (2) This course looks at the principal 2-Dimensional CAD techniques used by architects to create presentations, schematic drawings, and working documents. Emphasis is placed on the generation of 2D architectural graphics, the integration of those graphics with nongraphic data, and the uses of disparate graphic approaches.
