Minor Social & Cultural Factors in Environmental Design Print

The Social and Cultural Factors in Environmental Design minor emphasizes the political, cultural, social, and economic issues of concern to architects, landscape architects, and city planners. It is open to all majors.

Faculty Advisor: Ray Lifchez, 474 Wurster Hall, or any tenured CED faculty teaching a required minor course

Prerequisites

1. ENV DES 1 (3) or ENV DES 4 (3)

Required Courses

1. ARCH 110 (3) Social and Cultural Factors in Design. Architecture majors: To complete the major and this minor, complete four area studies courses or three area studies for the major and two classes in the ARCH 110 series to cover minor requirements 1 and 4.

2. CY PLAN 115 (3) Urbanization in Developing Countries. Urban studies majors: Complete an additional class in the ARCH 110 series.

3. CY PLAN 110 (3) Introduction to City Planning. Urban studies majors: Complete two courses for requirement 5.

4. One of the following:

  • ARCH 111 (3) Housing: An International Survey
  • ARCH 118AC (3) Cultures and Settings: Supporting Variations in Residential Design
  • ARCH 119 (3) Housing for Different Subcultures
  • ARCH 179 (1-4) Proseminar in the History of Architecture (a non-Western architecture section)
     

5. One of the following:

  • ENV DES C169A (3) Histories of the U.S. Cultural Environment
  • ENV DES C169B (3) Histories of the U.S. Cultural Environment
  • LD ARCH 130 (3) Introduction to Landscape Architecture
