Step 1: Finding/Mining Digital Images

  1. Six major image databases: 
    ARTstor, Associated Press, Cultural Materials, SPIRO, UC Image Service, Visual Collections
  2. SPIRO
  3. Ask AVRL staff to convert existing 35mm slides to digital
  4. Ask AVRL staff to shoot new digital images from books, periodicals, postcards, etc.
  5. UCB Library electronic resources by type: Image & Sound Databases
  6. UCB Libraries and Collections A-Z for image databases by subject
  7. In a Pinch: Google Images
  8. You, your colleagues', and students' own digital images

Image Guidelines

  • File Types
    • .jpg -excellent image quality for projection, manageable file sizes
    • .gif - small file sizes, lower image quality
    • .tiff - very large file sizes, for archiving and print publications. Convert to .jpg before projection
  • Resolution
    • 72 dpi minimum
    • 96 dpi recommended
    • (300 dpi for print publications)
  • Sizes
    • Thumbnail: 128 pixels - 250 pixels on the longest side
    • Reference: 400 pixels on the longest side
    • Projection: 650 pixels on the longest side and upwards
      • Good: 650 pixels on the longest side
      • Better: 1200 pixels on the longest size
      • Best: larger than 1200 pixels on the longest side
