Vital Signs 1998 Student Case Study Competition

CASE STUDY SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The following section comprises an outline for submission requirements. The names of the participant(s) or participating school or faculty sponsor must not appear on any materials which will be viewed by the jury. To do so will result in disqualification from the competition.

1. Case Study Entry Form. Each competition entry must be accompanied by a completed copy of the Entry Form, found in the back of this program. One form should be used for team entries. Each student on the team should be listed individually with one member of the team designated as the "contact person" to whom Vital Signs should address correspondence. All entries must have a faculty sponsor, who should be designated on the entry form. Other than the Entry Form and the computer disk described in #5 below, the identity of student(s), faculty, and university affiliations should remain anonymous throughout all parts of the case study submission. Include the Entry Form as specified below under Mailing Requirements.

2. Abstract. 1-page description, not to exceed 250 words will serve as the cover page. It should include your case study title, building name, brief synopsis of the project, and the major findings.

3. Case Study Report. The report is the essence of your case study, and must be no longer than 12 pages, using 10-point font. The format of the written and graphic materials should be visually well-crafted and include the following sections:

  • Introduction: Case study title; building, site, and climate description; design intent; specific building performance topic(s); resources used to guide your field evaluation, (e.g. Vital Signs Resource Package(s) or other references);
  • Hypothesis: Your hunch about an aspect of building performance. Your hypothesis should be testable using the methods described in the next section.
  • Methods: Description of the methods employed such as survey, interview and physical measurement, as well as any equipment used to gather and analyze data;
  • Results: Presentation of the findings of the field work in both narrative and graphic formats, such as figures, tables, photographs and/or supporting calculations;
  • Conclusions: Summarize the investigation and your conclusions regarding the topic and hypothesis; Was your hypothesis correct as originally stated or should it be revised in light of your findings? What are the design implications of your findings?
  • Lessons Learned: What lessons did you learn from conducting the case study?

4. The Case Study Dossier Form. Each case study submission must be accompanied by a completed Case Study Building Dossier Form, found in the back of this program. This form should be attached as an appendix to the case study submission.

5. Electronic Format. Please submit your case study on a 1.4 MB 3.5" floppy disk(s) or on an Iomega Zip Drive cartridge. You may compress the files using PKZip (PC) or Stuffit (Mac). The case study should be submitted as either a Pagemaker file (Release 5 or 6) or as a word processing file with accompanying graphic images saved as TIFF files. Graphic images in your Pagemaker file or TIFF files should be saved in color, even if you print them in black and white. If your case study is selected for the Vital Signs Internet site, we will publish the images in color. We prefer that word processing files be in Microsoft Word format. If you do not have this program, please save your work as a "text only" or ASCII file. Label the disk with your name(s), school and the building name. Indicate Mac or PC format.

6. Paper Copies. Paper Copies. Please submit eight (8) copies of the ABSTRACT and the CASE STUDY REPORT, printed double-sided. You only need to submit one copy of the REGISTRATION FORM and DOSSIER FORM.
