| Overview: This is one of three very well
conceived and executed case studies performed under the aegis of professors Don Dougald
and Michael Bednar at the University of Virginia. This is a study of the daylighting in two similar spaces with a vertical axis both at the University of Virginia. The historic Rotunda, designed by Thomas Jefferson, is a circular domed space whereas the new Caplin Pavilion is an orthogonal space with a clerestory. Architecture students conducted daylighting measurements under cloudy and sunny sky conditions and analyzed the data to determine distribution patterns. Visual comfort in these spaces was also assessed. |

Background: Professors Dougald and Bednar received a $5000 Vital Signs teaching support grant during the spring term of 1998 that helped support this investigation. |
