Authors: Aleksandr Mergold, Carla Noriega, Vladimir Pajkic, Carlos Ramirez, and Scott Saikley

School: Cornell University

Faculty Advisor: Alison Kwok

Brief: After a group study, the team came to realize that the
facade of the Olin Library, and particularly the fenestration, conceptually represented the idea of books or stacks. However, it was not clear how Olin, a building located at the south edge of the Arts Quad, used its wall openings to its advantage. Although Ithaca’s sky is mostly overcast, direct natural sunlight is still a factor.

The team studied the South facade examining how the relationship between wall openings and book stacks affect light conditions within the building.

The process involved construction of a model which simulated the original
space and which could be manipulated to study proposed improvements
within the space.

Background: Professor Kwok received a Vital Signs Equipment Kit Loan for the fall term of 1997 that supported the student investigation.
