Project Sponsors

One of the great joys of working on the Vital Signs Project has been the very tangible support, both conceptual and financial, provided by the project sponsors. It is rare for educators to receive direct support for the consideration and improvement of curriculum-related matters. I'm particularly proud of the sponsors listed below and of their commitment to the support of architectural education.

The Energy Foundation

The Energy Foundation was created in 1991 to assist in the nation's transition to a sustainable energy future by promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy. It is a joint initiative of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Rockefeller Foundation. They have been our principal source of funding and a substantial source of encouragement.

The Pacific Gas & Electric Company

PG&E has offered valuable support to the Vital Signs Project in two ways. The PG&E Energy Center provides the home offices for the curriculum project and in-kind access to the center's remarkable facilities. PG&E has also underwritten the Principal Investigator's stipend.

The National Science Foundation

In 1994 we submitted a proposal to NSF's Instructional Laboratory Improvement (ILI) Program for the development of standard sets of field instrumentation. The sets will be loaned to schools of architecture in order that they might try the Vital Signs field methods. NSF responded with the maximum award available under the ILI Program. We are seeking matching funds.

The U.S. Department of Energy

The U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) has provided a grant in support of the 1995 Summer Training Session. ACR and Onset Instruments have offered support for the purchase of equipment. In 1999, DOE has provided another grant in support of  Vital Signs Internet site maintenance. Please click here to view a copy of 1999 Vital Signs grant proposal to DOE.

The Nathan Cummings Foundation

In 1997, The Nathan Cumming Foundation has provided a grant in the support of the 1998 Student Case Study Competition and the incentive grants to educators at ACSA schools.

Project Participants

Resource Package Developers

Much of the "front line" work on the Vital Signs Project is being conducted by collaborating faculty at eleven schools of architecture. These participants responded to a request for proposals issued in March 1994 for the development of Resource Packages. They have been hard at work during the last year and are unveiling Beta copies of their packages at the August 1995 Summer Training Session.

Peer Reviewers

The Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE) has provided peer review coordination in an effort organized by G. Z. Brown of the University of Oregon. The following volunteer peer reviewers have provided valuable and substantial feedback during the development of Resource Packages:
