LIBRARY USER'S LIGHTING QUALITY SURVEY

Building: Phillips Exeter Academy Library

Date of survey: Nov. 2, 1996

Time of survey: throughout the entire day and early evening

Outside sky conditions: varies from sunny to partly cloudy through twilight

Inside luminance (at desk top):
(atrium center) - low reading @ 20 fc (no variation from daylight flux) (reading carrels) - varied from 100 fc upwards (below 100 fc, electric lights switched on)

Occupant comfort survey results

Daylight Electric
Light*
Number of users surveyed 18 8
Overall the lighting is comfortable 89% 100%
The lighting is uncomfortably bright for the tasks that I perform 11% 0%
The lighting is uncomfortably dim for the tasks that I perform 6% 13%
The lighting is poorly distributed here 17% 13%
The lighting causes deep shadows 17% 13%
Reflections from windows/skylights hinder my work 11% 0%
Direct glare from unprotected windows/skylights hinders my work 17% 13%

How does the lighting compare to workplaces in other buildings?

% who say "worse" 17% 13%
% who say "about the same" 50% 63%
% who say "better" 33% 25%

Percentage of occupants able to read text comfortably at:

4 pt. type and larger 89% 100%
6 pt. type and larger 100%

*In Interior reading rooms (ceiling luminaires)

NOTES:
[1] Two respondants who indicated "lighting is not comfortable" mentioned direct sun on carrels, and also mentioned the movable panels that block the sunlight.
[2] Two respondants said they prefer to sit at electrically lit spaces due to daylight brightness/glare sensitivity.

The next section presents a "self-evaluation of lessons learned" written by one of the students who undertook the study of the Phillips Exeter Academy Library.
